ST. THOMAS CHURCH

ST. THOMAS CHURCH

St. Thomas Anglican Church is the oldest church on Grand Turk. Built in 1797 the church and graveyard serve as a place of worship and the final resting place for some of the most notable families on the island.

The structures behind St. Thomas Anglican Church is called Matthew Tank. Built early on as a rain-water catchment, the entire hill was denuded of vegetation and channels cut into the stone leading to a very large cistern, where water would be stored. Atop Matthew Tank are ruins of an old armory that kept munitions necessary to defend the town.

Trams pass by St. Thomas Anglican Church, Matthew Tank, and the public cemetery on the way back to the Cruise Center, your guide will tell you all about its history and cultural significance to the local community.
